Normal People vs. Me

I was recently "chilling" in school, in the library in fact. It just happened that a sophmore (yes, I am in high school) sat down near me as I was looking through a book ("Apache", by O'Reilly, and I could have just gone to the man pages to learn what it told me, btw). This chick looks over and sees what I'm doing (reading a computer book) and asks me if I know a lot about computers.

Now here's the debate: should I say "yes" or "no"? ("Yes" usually elicits a giggle and "Are you a hacker?", whearas "no" usually means we talk about normal people stuff)

Well, I said "yes", figuring no harm could really be done; hacking might be a good way to start a) practicing social engineering and b) hitting on her (yes she was kinda hot). Well, no such luck. The next question was the hacker one, and I replied "Depends on your definition of a hacker.", referring to the age old dispute of "hacker" vs. "cracker". Unfortunatly, when I tried to explain this dispute, she was too dumb to understand. She goes (And I Quote!) "I thought everyone that knows stuff about computers was a hacker?"

Now where do morons like this come from? And beyond that, why did she even ask if I was a hacker if we're all hackers to non-computer folks. (NCF's, as I refer to them--I am an acronym lover. (AAL)) The real meat of this meandering article is not about this, but about what happened afterwards. Obviously to me, she went off giggling to her buddies by her locker (this sounds so teenybopper) and told her story (hopefully she was smart enough to leave out the "I'm dumb as a rock" part).

And now at my school, I'm the resident hacker. And I steal money from banks. I break into web sites and post mean messages on them. And (I love this one) I can change my very own GPA.

Whazzup wit folks these days? Why are all hackers bad?

My teacher recommended me to be an aide for tech people in the school, and from what I heard, my name is mud with the school folks. I'm a hacker. (And yes, they do watch me now, I have seen these weirdass folks.) Has anyone had a similar experience? I only have 129 days of school left, then I'm outta there, so how I fix this matters "0".

Even more important, how are we ("you") gonna fix this problem? I don't let people know I do computers any more, since it creates these kinda problems. I don't even look violent or criminal; I look normal! I hit on girls 24-7, which is quit anti-geek last I checked.

Where do these weird ideas that people have come from?
